East.

Some time ago, one of the sisters in law had mentioned arranging a weekend away to celebrate some big birthdays. I completely forgot all about it till hubby casually mentioned that this weekend was the one. We're therefore just back from a somewhat unexpected little holiday with family. We only stayed one night while the others were there for three. On Sunday we explored the village, beach and surroundings while those of the family without young children (ie all the rest!) tackled sections of the coastal walk.

We stayed in Earlsferry which is linked with Elie and is in the East Neuk of Fife - a previously unexplored part of Scotland for us. It's a very attractive and historic village and is blessed with a crescent shaped beach of beautiful, soft, golden sand.

After a lunch of deliciously crispy fish and chips (just how I like them - I'm not a fan of soggy chip shop chips at all) we walked out to the light house and visited the lady's tower. The tower was built in the 1770's as a summer house for Lady Janet Anstruther. She liked to bathe in the sea and a servant reputedly kept villagers away by ringing a warning bell. From the tower there are fantastic views and we could see seals in the sea.

Later we returned home via the Forth Road Bridge which neither hubby nor the children had never been over before. It had been a long time since I had been over the bridge too and I'd forgotten how big and impressive it is.

The East Neuk of Fife is a gorgeous part of the country and we'll definitely return another time for a longer stay. The lovely balmy and dry September weather we've been enjoying helped make the trip a success too.

I love the East Neuk summer and winter but have never stayed there. The pictures are fabulous and show so much detail from close ups of single items to landscapes.

I laughed when I realised you were up 'Enster way and felt shortchanged that there were no pics of fish n chips but I was relieved you said you did have some as it is definitely the law!!! Where did you go? We used to get ours in Anstruther but found we like the teeny chippy in Pittenweem much better.

What a great little getaway ... it's like taking a vacation just to look at these photos. I love the dormer windows, the tide-combed sands, the blue gate with flowers, the pink-stuccoed stairway and house (with stars in the windows), the turquoise boat. And those window boxes (on the pale grey house) are really impressive.

When my ship comes in I would like a private beach complete with tower, though I would skip the bell-ringing servant. :)

I've been dropping by your blog to see your photos - so beautiful. Years ago my husband had business in Aberdeen. We spent about a month there in January. I did all that I could do to see the sights. It was wonderful, but I did not get to do and see nearly enough. One of these days I will get back to Scotland. In the meantime, I enjoy your photos.

I'm an East Coaster through and through (taking a broad definition to include the Moray Firth!). Was at university on the East Coast and have lived in Edinburgh for 30 years, so I have a real sense of home looking at your photos.

Fife is a special place with great history and scenery around every corner. Nice photos as usual Anne. Next time you visit that area your children might be old enough to enjoy the chain walk.
