East.
Some time ago, one of the sisters in law had mentioned arranging a weekend away to celebrate some big birthdays. I completely forgot all about it till hubby casually mentioned that this weekend was the one. We're therefore just back from a somewhat unexpected little holiday with family. We only stayed one night while the others were there for three. On Sunday we explored the village, beach and surroundings while those of the family without young children (ie all the rest!) tackled sections of the coastal walk.
We stayed in Earlsferry which is linked with Elie and is in the East Neuk of Fife - a previously unexplored part of Scotland for us. It's a very attractive and historic village and is blessed with a crescent shaped beach of beautiful, soft, golden sand.
After a lunch of deliciously crispy fish and chips (just how I like them - I'm not a fan of soggy chip shop chips at all) we walked out to the light house and visited the lady's tower. The tower was built in the 1770's as a summer house for Lady Janet Anstruther. She liked to bathe in the sea and a servant reputedly kept villagers away by ringing a warning bell. From the tower there are fantastic views and we could see seals in the sea.
Later we returned home via the Forth Road Bridge which neither hubby nor the children had never been over before. It had been a long time since I had been over the bridge too and I'd forgotten how big and impressive it is.
The East Neuk of Fife is a gorgeous part of the country and we'll definitely return another time for a longer stay. The lovely balmy and dry September weather we've been enjoying helped make the trip a success too.

Muirshiel & Finlaystone
Here are a few photos from two separate Sunday outings.
The first set are from a visit to Muirshiel country park made last Sunday, 14th Sept. Cool and misty, lots of fungi. We took a picnic (hence the random muffin shot).
The second set are from a visit to Finlaystone estate made today. What a gorgeous warm, sunny day it has been - loving this September weather!
