As Tidy As It Will Ever Be...

Over the past month or so I've been "sorting" A's bedroom. This has involved re-homing a couple of bookcases from elsewhere in the house and moving some of the other pieces of furniture around a little. Oh, and tidying... lots of! I know many will still consider it very cluttered, but we do have a lot of stuff. She loves reading and has an excellent library of books. I would say that about 80% of her books have been bought from charity shops, an excellent and cheap source of good quality children's books.

The sun was shining a little this morning so it seemed a good time to attempt some photos of her room. I find it hard to take good quality indoor photos without flash. After some trial and error I think it's best to use my camera on the night time setting and rest it on something steady if it's going to be a longish exposure. The photos are still a little dim perhaps, but they'll do! By the way, my camera is a Fujifilm Finepix f100fd.

OK, here are some photos of the room in its tidy state (incase you were wondering!)

I was tempted to dig the African Flower blanket out the wardrobe for some staging, but didn't.

Now there's absolutely no more room for any more furniture. As more books come in we'll need to say goodbye to the ones she's grown out of. Of course, there'll be ones which we'll keep, indeed, some of the ones she has now were mine when I was younger. In those days books were relatively far more expensive than they are now so I didn't have many. I like her room, it's the kind of room I would have liked when I was little. I don't think I've imposed it on her though, there's enough of her own personality in it to make it hers.

Anyway, here, for comparison, are the messy photos...

And here, while I'm at it, are two photos I found of her room when we were just beginning the process of converting it from being a spare room...

Unfortunately, I can't find any photos of it as it was when we moved in. Imagine a dark underwater cave - dark blue carpet, navy skirting and cornicing, and dark blue walls. Believe it or not, the yellow, scrambled egg effect sponging was an improvement...

You have done a good job! What I find so frustrating with KP if I do a big tidy up is that within days it will look as if no-one had bothered with tidying it for months! You are right charity shopping for books is always a must - great bargains to be had.

I think it is a wonderful room, filled with beloved things. It's enveloping in a cozy and comfy way.
I would have loved a room like this.
Actually, I still would!

Lovely room, I always like lots of bits and bobs about me (much to my husbands annoyance) and my room was never tidy I'm afraid when I was a kid....I have to work very hard at being tidy, but I could never be minimalist. Your daughter's room is lovely, I like the dappled horses, and I have to say the pink, not any of that in this house, that's having all boys for you!

Oh, what a lovely, cosy room. It's just full of personality. Her book collection is impressive, and I love the way you've used that tall, thin Ikea cd unit as a way to display toys. I've often wondered if a printer's tray wouldn't be a good way of displaying all those plastic dolls/hello kittys/figures that little girls seem to love so much. x

I would have loved a room like that when I was a child - I had to share with Mum and Dad until we moved when I was 15.

I like your camera, mine is a Fuji too, the S5700.

It looks full of treasures and well-loved things. How nice to have such a great book collection. (We buy used books too - who could afford them new?)

I really like the rug....

What a fantastic room. It has so many things for a child to enjoy spending time there. You have done a fantastic job. My children are grown up now 24 and 15 still at home. Not many toys laying around any more. I miss them!
Enjoy, time goes very fast.

This reminds me of a photo book called "Where Children Sleep." If you google it, I think you can see some of the pictures. Very provocative.

It's a lovely room :-). I wish I could make Miss Mouse's room more like that (she'd love it) but her room unfortunately is teeny-tiny.

I love it, it's comfy looking and I'm a fan of quite 'busy' spaces, I find them visually interesting and I love hunting out the details....shame I'm married to more of a minimalist kind of guy - ha ha! I spotted a bunny lavender bag in there, that made me smile. I need to tackle the boys room soon, I just keep putting it off. Beth/thelinencat xx
